En el día de hoy os acercamos el proyecto de Gonçalo Silva y Daniela Silva para la reciente edición del concurso “Desafíos Urbanos ‘12”, galardonado con el segundo premio en la categoría correspondiente a propuestas de estudiantes.

The closure of many of the existing textile factories in Guimarães, as in the whole region of Vale do Ave has become recurrent over the last decades and affects not only socially and economically but also territorially.

Is already a clear high percentage of industrial buildings that are abandoned, example of that is the old Cavalinho factory, in the old days it was a major employer in the region. On the same time of this phenomenon of deindustrialization, Guimarães developed the ability to reinvent itself, while the industry continued its downward journey, the municipality turned to the preservation and redevelopment of these spaces and saw them as an opportunity for economic and social growth.

This proposal aims to follow the same principles of preservation and tribute to the region's industrial legacy, but also to rise the artistic potential of the textile.

At the beginning, the challenge was to find a gap on the infrastructures and services network of Guimarães. After realizing the increase of collapses on the regional factories, it didn’t take long to understand that was lacking a museological infrastructure that could collect an entire series of industrial equipment that reports the history of Vale do Ave.

This museum existed in fact, firstly located in a old factory at the city of Porto. Eventually closed in 2006, and this building became an Hotel, staying until today "dislodged" the museological collection. Still operating, there is another museum in Barcelos, with an area of 1200m2 where is reported the process for textile production from the traditional methods to the most contemporary. However, also this is a temporary situation waiting for solution.

Based on the points outlined above, and taking in account that the type of intervention to be carried out was free, the main idea of the proposal was to create a building not only directed to the textile industry as a mark of this site history, but also to be able to explore new approaches to the textile, reintegrating it into the culture and even the economy of Guimarães.
